Engraved Illustrations
Bartholomäus Kilian was part of a German family of engravers who were active from the 16th to 18th centuries. The Baroque engraving process involved the incision of a design into a metal (usually copper) using a burin, resulting in detailed and precise linework. The majority of the text's narrative is communicated through illustration, and consequently, Kilian's engravings demonstrate significant levels of complexity and attention to detail.
