News from nowhere
News from nowhere is an original work of science fiction by Morris, fusing Marxist thought with a romantic sensibility. The novel was originally published serially by the Commonweal magazine beginning in January 1890, and the Kelmscott Press eventually published the novel in full in 1892. The frontispiece of the book features an illustration of Morris's home Kelmscott Manor, located in Oxfordshire, for which the press was named.
News from nowhere explores a utopian future society where the means of production are under common ownership and social institutions like marriage and prison have been completely refigured. Besides being an author and artist, Morris was a founding member of the Socialist League in London. The novel can be seen as his rebuttal to frequently encountered objections about socialism and a counterargument to Edward Bellamy’s 1888 novel Looking Backward.
News from nowhere is printed in Golden type, one of the three original fonts designed by Morris. The Golden type is based on typeforms designed by the printer Nicolas Jenson in the 1470s, and it is named after the Golden Legend.
