An Account of the First Rise, Progress, Symptoms, and Cure of the Plague
This page is found in the second section of the book entitled “An Account of the First Rise, Progress, Symptoms, and Cure of the Plague.” It is comprised of the writings and observations of Doctor Hodges. This particular page addresses tokens which are a common symptom of the plague, in particular their colour and situation. According to the doctor, a token varies in color from being reddish, bluish, or even black. These tokens are most commonly found on the neck, breast, back and thighs. The doctor does not go into great detail about the visual description of the tokens, stating “these things are so vulgar that I may very well spare myself pains in giving any further account.” The doctor then goes on to recount stories, which indicate that the appearance of said tokens will quickly be followed by death.
