Title Page
Grose's text is the first text that appears in this book. The title page appears on the first page following the endpaper containing the Doggett catalog stamp.
The top of the title page contains cut-off marginalia. One can see the remaining fractions of the bottom of a line of text, but the only legible phrase is "Capt Grose." This name refers to the title of "Captain Grose," which Grose was commonly referred to as a result of his previous role in the army. This phrase and the other cut-off writing appears to be written in pen. Underneath the word "Guide," there is a note in pencil reading "Bound in calf. Let the edges remain precisely as they are." Therefore it seems that the marginalia had already been cut off in a previous binding, and that the Doggett's did not desire to remove it.
On the bottom-half of the title page, underneath "Honour," "By Francis Grose" has been written in pencil. The author's name is not included in the printed portion, so a reader added this information by hand. The absence of the author's name was possibly an error on the part of the printer.
