Aside from the preface, Grose's text is a compiation of eighteenth-century British advertisements taken from prior publications. Each entry is numbered - Grose's preface uses these numbers to reference certain sections - and labeled by what it advertises, such as "Matrimony" or "Coats for Winter." Length of entries vary from one to several paragraphs, and each contains information pertaining to location, author, publication, and original publication date. Grose does not add commentary in between the advertisements, but rather lets them speak for themselves and their transparent purpose of acquiring more wealth, whether through courtship or charlatanism.
