Illustration
On page 615 of Vento Otavo (the eighth chapter) of La Carta del Navegar Pittoresco one sees an illustration that occupies the whole page. From the di sotto in su angle, it appears that the spectator is standing on the ground gazing up at the classically derived collums and arches of a palace. Two naked female scultpures are affixed to the architecture, as are various wreaths or fruit bouquets. Via crosshatching, the artist is able to depict and similate shadow, lighting, and dynamism in shading.
