Section 2: Mahometan Religion
In Rycaut’s second section, “Of the Turkish Religion,” he uses engravings once again to give his readers a visual aid they can rely on while learning about an entirely new culture. British citizens had little exposure to Islam, so Rycaut’s section includes a complete overview of the religion. Rycaut discusses Islam’s history, its relationship with Christianity, and daily worship. In his engraving of an Imam, Rycaut’s subtitle calls this religious figure a ‘Parish Priest’. The parallel between Imams and Parish Priests is included to help his Anglican British readers understand Islam.
An Imam or a "Parish Priest" as Rycaut writes.
