Book Cover and Binding
The original cover of A Compendious System of Astronomy was removed in 1973 and replaced with a new aqua-green cover. After years of circulation with its original cover, the book was rebound. The original cover of the work was discarded when the book was rebound. The design and details of the original cover were not documented and the new cover gives no indication to what the original cover may have looked like. The cover gives no indication that the book is a textbook. In addition, the cover gives no hint to the fact that the textbook is an eighteenth century rare book and does the book a disservice to the reader and author.
The provenance indicates that the book was a gift to Tufts University by Frederick W. Crocker
When this work was rebound it maintained its internal structure and originality, but lost much of its original exterior. Along with a new cover, the book lost its two original endpapers and the stitching along the binding. Instead, the stitching has been replaced with a more modern adhesive binding.
