Illustrations
Kennett's book contains many woodblock engravings that depict Roman battles, military processions, and famous Roman figures. One of the images to the left shows the strength of the Roman army and navy as well as the emphasis on the military in Roman culture.
Additionally, there are 6 foldout images throughout the text. According to Caroline Winterer the "illustrations are so wonderful and imaginative that it can be difficult to find a copy whose pictures have not been cut out." In fact, in this edition of the book three illustrations have been cut out.
Aside from the big engravings the book contains many detailed illustrations around the beginnings of chapters and at the tops of pages. Usually the first letter of each chapter is surrounded by an elaborate design of some sort.
