Frothingam and Tufts

These first editions were gifted to Tufts University in June of 1895 by the children of Richard Frothingham. Frothingham was a noted figure of the 19th century Boston literary scene. He was particuarly interested in the study of American history. His body of work, including The History of Charleston and The Life and Times of Joseph Warren, earned him honorary degrees from both Tufts and Harvard University. Over the course of his academic career, Frothingham held a number of positions at Tufts:

  • From 1866 to 1872, Frothingham was a lecturer in the History department.
  • From 1868 to 1876, Frothingham was the Treasurer of the college.
  • From 1850 until his death in 1880, Frothingham served on the Tufts College Board of Trustees.

One of Frothingham's children, Thomas Frothingham, attended Tufts for one year, but subsequently dropped out of college and entered the military.

Bookplate recognizing this copy of The History of the American Revolution (volume one) as a gift from the children of Richard Frothingham Jr. The number in the lower left corner (written in pencil) was likely an old classification used by the Tufts College library.
