Book and Title Page
This book is the first volume in Morris' A History of British Birds. The binding on this book is in good condition from when it was originally published in 1862. This book was a personal copy of a Tufts alumna so it has a few signs of wear and usage but no serious damage to the outer cover. It contains 222 pages and its format is small and compact, unlike an encyclopedic text.
This copy of A History of British Birds from the Tisch Library Special Collections was a gift of Alumnus Dorothy Swenson from the class of 1918. This book was presumably her personal copy as there are slight markings on pages and there seems to be signs of wear. The inside cover's design complements the detailed images found throughout the book.
This image depicts the title page of Morris' A History of British Birds. Handwritten markings on the author's name illustrate how this book was a personal copy before it ended up in Tisch Special Collections. Additionally, this page reveals how the author is also a reverend and shows the quote "Gloria in excelsis deo", which in Latin means "glory to God on high" and is a Christian hymn.
