Manicules
The word manicule derives from the Latin tern maniculum, which means “little hand.” Readers of books draw manicules—symbols of hands with a single pointing finger—into the margins to clearly mark important areas in the text. Here are images of several penciled-in manicules in the margins of "Some Considerations Touching the Usefullnesse of Experimental Naturall Philosophy." Handwriting of the manicules appears consistent throughout the book. This stylistic consistency points to the idea that the same reader drew them all, though they are dispersed throughout the majority of the book.
