A Centaur Family
Subject
Centaurs in art
Description
Engraving of a centaur family. A mother centaur nurses one of her two children, while the father centaur holds up a cub that he has brought to them in a wooded landscape.
Engraved by Collaert, Jan (1566-1628) and published by Galle, Philippe (1537-1612).
From the horse print series, Equile Ioannis Austriaci Caroli V. IMP. F., originally dedicated to Don Juan of Austria. From the four known editions of the print series, this engraving was added with the publication of the second edition.
As the print has been trimmed and lacks text in the lower margin, it is impossible to tell whether it is first or second state (not third) since it's inclusion into the horse print series. Starting from the second edition, this print formed part of the series of horses in the Stable of Don Juan of Austria, although initially (and logically) it has nothing to do with the rest of the series.
Inscription: Lettered in image area bottom center "Ioann. Stradanus delineator / Ioann. Collaert sculptor / Phls Galle excudit"
The print is missing four lines of Latin text in two columns in margin, which were cut or trimmed out of the original: "Adspice Zeuxis opus, quod fama erat aequore mersum, / Artifici Salvum post mala fata manu, / Ingenia id nostri nam supplent daedala secli / Ingenio quod edax tempus et unda rapit."
