Description

Image from page 260 of The Origin and Influence of the Thoroughbred Horse (1905) by Ridgeway, William, Sir, 1853-1926.

Cropped image of an engraving originally from the series, Equile Ioannis Austriaci Caroli V. Imp. F., of horses drawn from the stables of Don John of Austria.

A galloping horse wearing three feathers on its head and a braided mane. Afer in latin means "African" or "of Africa." The landscape depicts an unidentifiable, non-European land inferred by the palm tree-esque plant life dotting the middle ground.
