Provenance and Circulation

Tufts University Library label.

Tufts College Library purchased this second edition copy of The Mysteries of Udolpho in 1908. It was part of the circulating library for an extended period of time, which accounts for some of the damage to the volumes. The four volume set is in surprising good condition however, especially compared to the copy of The Mysteries of Udolpho currently in circulation at Tisch Library. The 1794 edition has very few annotations and its structural condition is sound. In contrast, the modern edition is heavily annotated.

Circulation slip in volume one.

There is no record of when The Mysteries of Udolpho was moved from the circulating library into special collections. Based on the date stamps on the circulation slip in the back of volume one, it is clear that The Mysteries of Udolpho was in circulation at least into the 1960s. At some point after that time the work was added to Tisch Special Collections.
