Survival

On page 55, Wood begins to discuss the concept of preparing oneself for a long journey.  He gives instructions as to what to drink and eat, such as eggs, bacon, rice, and wine.  This, like any other travel guide today is giving the necessary instructions on how to pack ones bag.  Wood seems to understand that the journey from England would also be difficult for his audience—upper class people who may never have stepped on a ship before.  The section emphasizes the need to pass on travel experience to those who want to explore.  Otherwise, long journeys across the Atlantic Ocean could be deadly.  This portion also fits well with the overarching purpose of the book.  It seeks to educate potential travelers and assumes that they are approaching the situation with absolutely no knowledge of New England or the people living there.
