Along with Frederick Douglass's narratives, other autobiographical accounts, whether through prose or poetry, document the experiences of enslaved Americans. Tisch Special Collections houses the Narrative of Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and women's rights activist who was a formerly enslaved person. The Life and Sufferings of Leonard Black: A Fugitive From Slavery documents Leonard Black's escape from slavery and his journey to becoming a Baptist minister. The collection also has Phillis Wheatley's Poems on various subjects, religious and moral, the first Black author of a published book of poetry in the United States.
