The purpose behind “Metamorphosis” is to discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that separated people physically, and showed us that our society was already quite disconnected. To create this installation, I fashioned a wire frame, then covered it with rice paper, inspired by the shape of the Urodid moth’s cocoon. I then made a net from disposable masks and wrapped it around the cocoon. I wanted to convey that while many people struggled with losing loved ones, financial challenges, and instability due to the pandemic, a great many people were also able to find benefit in the newfound time they had for themselves. For some people, the pandemic has, in some ways, been a time of self-discovery and healing. Therefore, as we slowly came out of quarantine, some of us had been metamorphosed through an insightful isolation that allowed us to see the world and one another in a new light.
