La bande dessinée Bienvenue au Calais illustre les épreuves des migrants dans le camp. Même s’il y a 1500 personnes dans le camp, il y a seulement « 80 toilettes, de simples robinets, pas de douches, et aucune possibilité de faire la cuisine à l’abri . » Les gouvernements d’Europe ne pensent pas à la souffrance des migrants, et avec la peinture murale, Banksy peut encourager les gens à penser comment les humains qui sont importants pour la société sont maltraités. Même si les conditions à Calais sont terribles, les migrants qui vivent à Calais survivent au voyage en l’Europe, contrairement à beaucoup de migrants qui sont perdus dans la mer. Chaque année, beaucoup de migrants meurent dans la mer à cause du fait que les conditions de leurs voyages sont dangereuses. Dans le livre à ce stade de la nuit, Maylis Kerengal parle d’un naufrage près de l’île italienne de Lampedusa, le 3 octobre 2013, quand environ 350 migrants sont morts dans la Méditerranée . Kerengal veut montrer à l’Europe que la mort des migrants n’est pas isolée de la politique de l’Europe. Les Européens aussi ont une responsabilité de connaître la situation des migrants et d’essayer de voter pour les lois on qui peut aider les migrants et peut arrêter leur mauvais traitement. Elle dit que les océans ne sont pas les terrains neutres, particulièrement quand beaucoup de migrants meurent dans l’océan. En fait, la mer est un endroit « sur quoi migrent les hommes depuis que la mer existe ; elle aussi ouvre de nouvelles routes à mesure que s’inventent de nouveaux trafics, qu’augmentent les échangés, que naissent les chantiers, que s’amplifie la pauvreté, que se répand la guerre… ». La mer n’est pas neutre tant que les migrants meurent dans la mer pendant leur voyage à Europe, et Kerengal et Banksy veulent parler de comment les vies des migrants ne sont pas mettre en valeur. Ils veulent encourager les européens à repenser la situation. La mer et le camp de réfugiés à Calais sont similaires au sens que les deux deviennent des types de purgatoires pour les migrants qui ne survivent pas toujours quand ils essaient de traverser. Le symbolisme du purgatoire est clair dans le livre Cannibales, où le personnage principale, Aziz, décrit la barque qui les migrants utiliseront comme « un gros cercueil » qui lui « faisait peur ». La barque devient le vaisseau, comme la barque de Charon dans la mythologie grecque, qui transporte les migrants au-dessus de purgatoire. S’ils survivent, ils peuvent arriver à paradis où à l’enfer, mais ils ont besoin d’échapper le purgatoire. Les deux territoires—l’Europe et leurs pays d’origine—ne sont pas des paradis, mais le purgatoire est nécessaire de traverser quand même. Le voyage forme l’identité des migrants, parce qu’ils ont besoin d’endurer beaucoup de souffrance pour traverser le purgatoire. Banksy comprenne la souffrance des migrants, et avec la peinture murale, il exprime que les migrants peuvent aider la société et contribuer à beaucoup d’idées, mais souvent, ils ne reçoivent pas l’opportunité de réussir.
