Même s’il n’inclut aucun élément religieux, di Luca utilise le Notre Père comme modèle ; il adresse la mer directement, la personnifiant, comme on adresserait Dieu. Le titre est un jeu de mots entre les mots « mer » et « mère ». Il la supplie d’être protectrice des migrants qui la traversent au lieu de prennent les vies des innocents. Il écrit, « Notre mer qui n’es pas aux cieux à l’aube tu prends la couleur du froment / Au coucher du soleil, celle des raisins à la vendange / Nous t’avons semée de noyés, plus que n’importe quelle tempête » (9-11). Comme Assalti Frontali, il admet la beauté de la mer ; il crée des images fortes de la majesté de ses couleurs et sa grandeur. Cependant, ces images sont en contraste saisissant avec les unes qui montrent les horreurs qui se passent au même endroit. Il décrit la mer comme cimetière, une image qui apparait souvent dans la littérature de migration. On voit cette image dans Le pain nu de Mohamed Choukri dans la phrase « on commence à voir des corps sur le sable, rejetés par la mer » (Choukri, 125) et aussi dan à ce stade de la nuit quand de Kerangal écrit que la mer est « peuplée de cadavres, hantées de fantômes » (de Kerangal, 66). Tous ces corps sont l’évidence du bilan que ce travers prend sur les migrants. Leurs histoires meurent avec eux ; ils sont même plus invisibles que ceux qui survivent, ils restent anonymes pour toujours. La beauté et la mort sont deux vérités du même espace, mais trop souvent, on se laisse à oublier le dernier, alors di Luca les met côté à côté pour accentuer notre ignorance. Cependant, il ne rejette la faute sur personne, dont la mer ; son ton n’est pas accusatoire, même des ignorants. Le poème termine avec ces lignes : « Tu gardes les vies, les visites, tombées comme des feuilles sur les boulevards / Tu fais office d’automne pour elles, de caresse, d’embrassade, de baiser sur le front / De mère et de père, avant le départ » (16-18). Il lui demande de protéger les vies des migrants qui sont assez courageux de tenter le passage et de les montrer la tendresse. Son ton est plus optimiste des celles de Assalti Frontali et Jacques Prévert. Il pense d’un futur où les tragédies de migration diminueront ou peut-être arrêteront. Il ne supplie pas vraiment avec la mer, mais avec tous les citoyens italiens et d’autres de ne pas laisser les migrants à mourir à cause de l’ignorance.
