                <text>Ce poème de Jacques Prévert était écrit en 1951, il y a plus de soixante années. Cependant, malheureusement, les problèmes dévoilés là-dedans sont toujours pertinents aujourd’hui. Il énumère les endroits à Paris où vivent et travaillent des immigrés : Javel, Aubervilliers, Grenelle. La splendeur de la ville est mise en contraste avec la misère des gens qui l’habitent, qui sont décrits comme des « ébouillanteurs des bêtes trouvées mortes sur pied / au beau milieu des rues » (Prévert, 9-10). Malgré que ces hommes fassent les travails le plus durs, ils sont toujours trop pauvres de même donner à manger à leurs familles. Cependant, ils acceptent cette vie parce qu’il n’y a pas d’autre choix. Dans Cannibales, un roman de Mahi Binebine qui raconte les histoires d’un groupe de migrants clandestins avant de partir en Europe, le narrateur Azzouz dit, « nous entrainer pour l’avenir : apprendre à devenir invisible…à s’effacer, à n’être personne…apprendre à être un cafard » (Binebine, 82). Ils se préparent pour la déshumanisation inévitable qui les attendait en Europe et pour la vie de misère que Prévert décrit. Les immigrés vivent parmi les parisiens riches, mais ils bougent entre eux sans être vus. Ils peuvent être écrasés sous les pieds comme des cafards, mais ils toujours survivront, même dans cette société qui se semble dépourvue d’humanité. &#13;

Une façon pour les immigrés à s’en sortir est de garder des parties de leur culture d’origine. Prévert écrit, « Esclaves noirs de Fréjus / qui évoquez chaque soir…tous les échos de vos villages / tous les oiseaux de vos forêts » (Prévert, 25-31). Ces hommes ont deux vies séparées : la vie européenne de la journée et la vie de la soir, quand ils peuvent ranimer les traditions culturelles de leurs pays natals. Ils vivent à la frontière entre deux identités, incapable d’adopter entièrement l’un ou l’autre. Même s’ils ont accompli le passage à travers la frontière physique qui est la mer, ils sont toujours dans un état perpétuel de passage parce qu’ils habitent l’espace indéfini entre ces deux identités contradictoires. Ils sont, peut-être sans le connaître, ceux qui Amin Maalouf s’appelle dans son essai Identités meurtrières des « êtres frontaliers » qui « ont pour vocation d’être des traits d’union, des passerelles, des médiateurs, entres les diverses communautés, les diverses cultures » (Maalouf, 11). Même si une grande partie de la société française ne veut pas créer des liens entre leur culture et celles des immigrés, leur présence le rend inévitable. En jouant la musique de leurs villages dans la rue, les hommes à qui Prévert fait référence partagent une partie de leur culture avec ceux qui prennent le temps de les écoutent, comme Prévert, lui-même. &#13;

Dans un interview de l’émission La grande librairie, Maylis de Kerangal a dit de son roman, à ce stade de la nuit, « Pour moi, ce qui est important est que le lecteur puisse vivre, exister, en essayant d’écouter ». Elle essaye de raconte l’histoire des migrants qui étaient victimes d’un naufrage près de Lampedusa qui ne possèdent pas la voix de le raconter eux-mêmes. Elle reconnait qu’elle ne peut pas parler pour les gens qu’elle ne connait pas, alors elle raconte sa propre « histoire d’écoute » et son processus de compréhension et elle pousse ses lecteurs à faire le même au lieu de rester ignorant aux souffrances des migrants. Dans Étranges Étrangers, Jacques Prévert veut relater un message très similaire. Il humanise des immigrés et il dévoile les injustices qu’ils souffrent chaque jour. Il écrit, « On vous a renvoyé / la monnaie de vos papiers dorés / On vous a retourné… » (Prévert, 45-47). Il utilise le pronom personnel « on » pour montrer son propre sentiment de culpabilité pour la violence coloniale qui a forcé ses gens de quitter leurs pays d’origine et pour le manque d’hospitalité vers eux en France. Comme de Kerangal, il encourage son lecteur d’écouter les voix des migrants pour qu’il puisse reconnaitre les injustices qu’ils gèrent et arrêter de fermer ses yeux sur le misère qui existe au milieu de son propre société. </text>
