<text>Phineas Taylor Barnum was a man gifted in multiple professions such as business, show, author, publisher, philanthropist, and politics for a short period of time. He is known for many things but relating to Tufts he is known for bringing the University the taxidermied Jumbo as well as numerous other animals both rare and not in his Barnum Museum of Natural History. There is also a science building named after Mr. Barnum which is directly behind the Elephant on top of the academic quad.
Barnum has written numerous novels discussing the environment and the animal live which thrives within it. His book "The Wild Beasts, Birds and Reptiles of the World" was a fictional novel written in the early 1890's. This novel has vivd images as well as stories of the capture of animals mainly focusing on dangerous and non dangerous game in Africa. The novel is set up as short stories and accounts of each capture of the animals and other captures realting in region and animal classification. There are plain animals from africa such as Antelopes,Kudu, Water Buffalo and many others for example. There is also the account of Jumbo the elephant that Barnum had donated to Tufts University. Barnum writes stories of hunting these animals as well as capturing them as some, such as lions and other dangerous game, were too difficult to capture. The Novel also focuses on the different environments in which the different animals live and how each was to be captured or harvested. It was not an easy task to obtain these animals as they are dangerous in and of themselves but the captures and hunters also had to deal with the other dangerous game as well as angry Native Africans. </text>
